In 1861, it had been found that the military style scarlet uniforms 'alarmed half the old ladies in London' and they quickly soiled. So the Post Office issued 'blue frock-coat jacket, scarlet collar, cuffs, and piping, blue vest vest piped with scarlet, trousers with a broad scarlet stripe plus an early style of peaked cap: In 1875 this uniform reached the provinces.
